Dunajec river and Poprad Valley (Huchen)

Huchen “has a slender body that is nearly round in cross-section. Its head is big, slightly flat with wide mouth reaching out of the end of the eye. The huchen’s fat fin is big while the remaining fins are relatively small. Its tail fin is clearly corrugated. Its hulls are very tiny. Its back is brownish or greenish grey, its sides are lighter with copper shine, the belly is white.

On the sides, there are numerous, irregular, small, dark patches. This largest permanent fresh water salmonid is on average 5-10 kg at a length of 80-100 cm. 15-year-long species may reach 150cm and weigh 52kg. The heaviest huchen ever caught was 60 kg at a length of 183 cm” – this is what Wikipedia will tell you.

The rest are emotions, the dream of many spinning anglers. You may discuss the victories (more often defeats), baits, techniques, and even the most hidden fisheries for many days.

Whom with? You won’t find a better person than Janusz Widel who has been successful at hunting this fish for many years.

Feel invited to come over two rivers where these copper monsters live. Both Poprad and Dunajec are shallow waters with up to 2m of depth. The pull force depends on the level of the river to a big extent. This means one thing: problems with the right choice of bait.

With shallow waters, shallow but relatively lively baits are good. When the water raises by 0.5m only, you have to apply stream baits which are not so lively. Other baits? Of course but the number of torn sets will quickly make you come back to wobblers (by the way – our guide produces one of the best wobblers in the country).

Small Vistula river

The fishery was founded in 2005. Since the very beginning, its host has focused on stocking and water protection. In the very first days, he launched a full-time fishing guards fighting against poachers, so common a problem on Polish waters. Thanks to these measures, today one may count on frequent fish catch in the Small Vistula, while coming across a fat brown trout is nothing special. The Vistula is one of the rivers exceeding the national average as far as its fish count is concerned.

The fishery is about 30 km long so there are plenty of interesting places along its banks. Shoots are typical in the Vistula. The best period for trips to the river is the end of winter and spring. In this time, with higher waters, it is easier to mislead the brown trout.

In late spring and summer, the water level is low, which makes it more difficult (but not totally impossible) to catch the trout.  An additional disadvantage of warm seasons over the Vistula are bathing people who startle careful fish. If you want to try fly fishing and catch the brave brown trout, this is one of the best places in Poland.

Raba River

On the section Dobczyce – Gdow , Raba River, is interesting and full of fishes, fishery with “ Catch and Realise”. The host of it is PZW Krakow District. This medium size river vividly flows among hills. Riversides are overgrow with trees and clusters of wattle. The bottom is mainly rocky but there are some places full of gravel. Narrowness is possible to happen. Under the riverbanks  quick streams are washing away  deeper  to 1,5 meters gutters, turns from the one bank to the other. Because the fishery is situated directly to the dam in Dobczyce, the water is all year cold and full of oxygen. That creates very good conditions for trouts and graylings. At the moment, the dominate species is brown trout. That is way this section is full of brown trouts. Mainly you can catch 30-45 centimeters long trouts. But you should be prepared to meet much longer individuals, even over half of the meter. The other fish worth your attention at Raba River is grayling. Its population grows yearly. Unfortunately it is not easy to catch individual longer than 35 centimeters. Apart from brown trouts and graylings, you can might hunt : chubs, common dace and from time to time common nase barbells and  asp. At this section only the fly fishing method is allowed. Brown trout is possible to catch by the streamer. Thanks to the nymphs we can catch brown trouts and graylings. Dry fly is useful during the hatches of insects.  Excellent, but underestimated fishing method of local fishes is also wet fly. Especially during the summer evenings.
Raba is perfect fishery for an angler who is ready for an adventure with large trout.
Is also great place for start an adventure with fly rod or to improve your skills.

San River

It’s one of Poland’s best fisheries for salmonid.  This is a correct definition albeit it does not tell you the whole truth about this mountain river. The San is in fact one of Europe’s best fisheries for salmonid.

Feel invited to fish for trout. The San is famous for its beautiful fish of this species. Is 40 centimeter the right size? We would be irresponsible to say that you will always catch such fish with us. But we are sure that your chances are vast.

Read regularly our blog and you will know what kind of fish our guides catch. Spinning and trout are not everything the San can offer to you. We would like to talk you into fly fishing.  The San is famous especially for its huge grayling caught with artificial fly. Do you fear that you won’t make it?

We don’t guarantee that a one-day trip will end with beautiful trout or grayling. You mustn’t forget that trout are very cautious fish. Grayling do not have to get interested with the bait offered. We do guarantee, however that our guides regularly catch beautiful fish. They know which spots may be most effective in each season of the year. They have necessary experience to apply the proper bait.  What more, they make perfect baits themselves.
